Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas had a potent offensive attack on Wednesday, churning out 17 hits to blow out the Isotopes at home. El Paso scored nine runs in the fifth inning. … Catcher Cody Roberts has not received a lot of playing time this season, but he’s been productive when given the opportunity. Roberts singled three times and scored three runs. After spending last year in the Phillies organization, the 28-year-old signed with the Padres in the off-season. In nine games for the Chihuahuas, the former North Carolina backstop is hitting .367/.387/.500. … Right fielder Bryce Johnson had a double and a pair of singles to go with a team-high four RBI in the victory. Johnson, 29, has been productive in his return to El Paso this season. Wednesday’s performance raised his overall slash-line to .289/.409/.447 with the Chihuahuas. He was re-acquired by the Padres in a minor league trade that sent catcher Brett Sullivan to the Pirates’ organization. … Left fielder Tirso Ornelas reached base four times with three singles and a walk. The three-hit effort was Ornelas’ fifth multi-hit game in his last eight played for the Chihuahuas. The 25-year-old has just three homers but an impressive .393 on-base percentage. … Righty Matt Waldron earned the win with a solid start in his first game since officially coming of the IL and being optioned to El Paso. The knuckleballer tossed five solid innings, allowing just two runs while scattering six hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Waldron stretched out to 70 pitches, throwing 51 strikes. … Austin Krob tossed the game’s final three innings to earn his first save as a professional. The former TCU lefty allowed three hits, striking out three. Krob has functioned as a swing-man for El Paso this year after pitching in the rotation the last two years in his transition to pro ball. Krob, who has generally shown excellent command since the Padres drafted him in the 12th round in 2022, has sometimes struggled to throw strikes in his maiden voyage into the PCL. He’s looked stronger as of late, though; he’s walked just three over his last 11 innings pitched.

Prospect Watch: The RockHounds gifted San Antonio with two runs on a throwing error in the ninth to tie the game, but put up a four-spot in the tenth inning to defeat the home club. … Devin Ortiz broke out of a 3-for-26 stretch with a three-hit game. The 26-year-old infielder singled three times and drove in a run. The former Virginia infielder has been a solid contributor this season despite not showing much power. Ortiz is fourth in the Texas League with 55 hits. … Kai Murphy had a pair of singles and drove in a run in the loss. The effort was Murphy’s first multi-hit game in a month. The former Arizona State pitcher/outfielder has struggled this year with the Missions, posting just a .584 OPS. Murphy has frequently put the ball in play, as his 14% K-rate is the eighth-best in the circuit, but he has struggled to hit the ball with authority. … While the bullpen struggled late in this one, Jagger Haynes pitched well, going six innings for the second straight start. The lefty allowed two runs on two hits, walking four and striking out six. Much like last season, Haynes got off to a slow start but has looked better pitching to a 3.45 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 31.2 innings over his last six starts. He’s continuing to use his changeup more effectively in games, pairing it with a slider that remains his best offering and a fastball that can top out in the upper-90s. … Righty Manuel Castro had his roughest outing in a month, giving up three earned runs and four overall when he came on to maintain the tie in the 10th. The 23-year-old, who had walked only eight batters all year, issued three free passes in this one.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps jumped to a lead early and defeated the Sky Carp on a nice night in Wisconsin. … Center fielder Kai Roberts had his best game as a TinCap, tallying three hits and notching his eighth stolen base. The former University of Utah outfielder, who has been moved down in the lineup from the leadoff spot, came into the night hitting .158, but raised it 56 points in the game. It was his second multi-hit game in 12 since coming off the IL and joining Fort Wayne. … Jacob Campbell had a pair of hits in a homecoming game. The 25-year-old was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, roughly 13 miles from Beloit. The catcher-turned-outfielder has a .701 OPS for the TinCaps in 30 games this season. … Clark Candiotti made the start for the TinCaps and looked sharp in his first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. The 24-year-old walked a pair of batters and allowed an RBI double and an RBI groundout before being pulled. Candiotti only threw 67 pitches before departing. Over his last 13.1 innings, Candiotti has struck out 20 batters. … Sean Barnett is officially a two-way player. The former Wingate University star made his first official outing, working a scoreless inning. He did not allow a hit, nor did he notch a strikeout as the Carp made weak contact. He ran his fastball up to 96 mph. As a hitter, Barnett has produced a .777 OPS this season. He will continue to hit as a designated hitter multiple times a week while ramping up in a relief role. The big righty has never had a full workload as a pitcher and needs to adjust, not just to the routines, but to the in-game challenges of pitching. … Tyson Neighbors recorded the final five outs of the game to earn his fifth save of the year. Neighbors allowed one hit and struck out two. The young reliever has looked electric for the TinCaps this season. Wednesday’s outing lowered his ERA to 1.25. He has racked up 38 strikeouts in 21.1 innings. … One note: former Padres pitcher Woo-Suk Go made a rehab appearance, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings. He was part of the package the Marlins got in the Luis Arraez deal.

During the streak, King is 13-for-24 with just three strikeouts. … Zach Evans had his second consecutive three-hit game as he collected four RBI. Evans went just 2-for-19 last week in Stockton but is 6-for-9 with five RBI so far against the Nuts. Evans is fourth in the league with 38 RBI despite hitting just one home run. … First baseman Victor Figueroa broke out of a mini-slump with three hits, including a pair of doubles. The 21-year-old first baseman had an 0-for-14 stretch last week, but his three-hit effort raised his slash-line to .283/.377/.565 with the Storm. … Lefty Kash Mayfield pitched for the first time since leaving a start on May 13 with shoulder soreness. The 20-year-old looked sharp, pitching a pair of scoreless innings. He struck out four before giving way to Kleiber Olmedo. Mayfield will likely build up slowly, perhaps looking to throw 45 pitches in his next start. He threw just 24 on Wednesday – 18 for strikes. … Infielder Yendry Rojas left the game in the seventh after an apparent arm injury on a stolen base attempt. The 20-year-old had a pair of hits and a walk in the game. He easily stole second, and had third in his back pocket before he overslid the base. We’ll have an update when one is available.

After posting a paltry .306 OPS last year, the switch-hitter has been much better in 2025. Wednesday’s effort raised his slash-line to .290/,380/.348. … His double-play partner, Yimi Tovar, had three singles and drove in a pair of runs. Tovar, also 19, has hit in five straight games and has contributed a .721 OPS. A bit of an undersized righthander, Tovar spent two years in the DSL after signing for a $10,000 bonus out of Venezuela. … Righty Humberto Cruz made the start for the ACL squad and pitched a career-high 2.2 innings. Cruz allowed three runs on four hits, walking one and striking out three. Cruz has a 5.14 ERA with nine strikeouts in a small, 8.2-inning sample for the complex Padres. … Ruben Galindo made his second rehab outing and allowed a run on a hit while recording two outs. As Galindo gets stretched out, he seems like a good bet to return to Fort Wayne when ready.
